Worried about second-hand vaping? Here’s everything you need to know.
Although scientific research tells us that vaping is much less harmful than smoking, some people are still a little concerned about the potential risks that come with e-cigarettes.
There will always be sceptics, some of whom don’t actually vape themselves, who are concerned that second-hand vapour can pose a threat.
But does it really cause any harm? How worried should you be?
The experts and Cloudstix investigate in this article.
What is second-hand vaping?
You might have heard of second-hand smoking, and second-hand vaping is almost the same thing.
It happens when a person inhales the vapour exhaled from someone else’s e-cigarette close by, and it’s labelled as second-hand because it doesn’t come directly from the e-cig.
It’s already been inhaled and exhaled by the first person before it reaches the second.
The dangers of second-hand smoke have only come to light in recent years, and it was discovered that second-hand smoke from cigarettes is almost just as damaging as smoking them yourself.
This seems to be where the concerns around second-hand vaping stem from.
What’s in second-hand vapour?
Second-hand vapour doesn’t really contain much of anything.
Typically, you’ll find all the components that make up most e-liquids.
There’ll be some levels of propylene glycol (PG), vegetable glycerine (VG), flavourings and nicotine if the person vaping is using a liquid that contains it.
Is it dangerous?
So far, research shows that second-hand vapour carries little to no risk.
In fact, research has proved that second-hand vapour poses no significant harm to human health at all, as opposed to smoke from cigarettes, which has the potential to cause significant problems.
It’s a common misconception that nicotine is the most harmful element in cigarette smoke, which is also present in hundreds of e-liquids.
However, almost all of the damage comes from the thousands of other chemicals in tobacco smoke, many of which are extremely toxic – including tar and carbon monoxide.
You won’t have to worry about being exposed to these elements if you find yourself inhaling second-hand vapour from an e-cigarette.
Should I practice ‘polite vaping’?
It’s always a good idea to be considerate of the people around you whilst you’re vaping, especially in public spaces.
Even though we’ve discovered that passive vaping isn’t all that dangerous, many people would still prefer to inhale fresh air – without being hit in the face by clouds of fruity-smelling vapour.
