From patches and chewing gum to inhalers and nasal sprays, there’s a plethora of nicotine replacement products on the market these days – all of which work differently for everyone. Perhaps more surprisingly, many smokers are opting to ditch their favourite blend of tobacco cigarettes and using e-cigarettes instead.
New research from Queen Mary University of London has found that vaping and e-cigarettes are far more effective than other nicotine replacement treatments when achieving long-term smoking reduction and quitting for good.
In terms of costs, your health and availability, vaping offers many benefits, but is it really better than smoking?

How much does smoking cost?
Smokers in the United Kingdom spend immense amounts of money every year to fund their habits, and the price of cigarettes goes up each year.
For a pack of 20 cigarettes in the UK, the cost varies between £8.80 to £13.50 across different supermarkets.
If you were to smoke a pack of 20 every day, this would cost you a minimum of £3,212 every year, of course depending on the brand of cigarettes you’re buying and where you’re buying them from.
This is a phenomenal amount of money that could be put to better use, but is vaping any cheaper?
How much does vaping cost?
It’s safe to say that vaping is much cheaper than smoking cigarettes.
When you start vaping, you have the upfront cost of whichever e-cigarette device you choose, and then the ongoing cost of e-liquids and replacement coils after this. For a good starter kit, you’ll pay anywhere between £8 and £57.99 with us here at Cloudstix, and there’s plenty of options for you to choose from.
Take the Eleaf ARC 5 starter kit, for example – this will cost you £39.99, and includes everything you need to get set up (a coil, a battery, charging wires, etc). Most vapers find they need to replace their coil every 2 weeks or so.

For a set of five Eleaf GTL coils, you’ll pay £11.99 per time – with each coil lasting you 2 weeks. That means you’ll spend roughly £59.95 on coils for the year. Altogether, you’d pay approximately £306.94 over the entire year. Whilst this is just an example, and it could be more (or less!) depending on the products you select, it’s significantly less than what you’d pay for a years’ worth of tobacco cigarettes.
Is vaping really better for your health?
We’re all more than aware of how damaging smoking cigarettes can be for our health, but how is vaping any different?
E-cigarettes don’t burn tobacco and they don’t produce tar or carbon monoxide – two of the most harmful elements in tobacco smoke. Instead, they work by heating a liquid that contains nicotine; while it can be addictive, it’s relatively harmless.
Like anything else, they’re not completely risk free, but they only carry a small fraction of the risk of cigarettes.
Are e-cigarettes easy to purchase?
If you smoke, you know that you can purchase tobacco cigarettes from almost any supermarket or corner shop in the country.
E-cigarettes don’t seem to be as readily available. Although you can purchase some products in a selection of supermarkets, the options are often very limited.
You can, however, visit your local vape superstore or go online to find everything you’ll need to start vaping.
