Are you bored of your e-cigarette? Then it may be time to consider a vape mod.
For many, vape mods offer the natural next step in vaping, and, with more customisable features than you could shake a stick at, the sky is the limit when it comes to getting things exactly how you like it. But where do you start? If you’re looking to enhance your personal experience with vaping, then you’ll want to know which the best vape mods are, and how best to use them for the most rewarding experience – and we can help.
Our in-depth guide to vape mods will shed light on what vape mods are, why they’re so popular, which brands to consider and how you can get the most out of your vape mod for a superior personalised experience. So, let’s get started!
What are vape mods?
Vape mods are advanced (modified) vape devices, which offer more power and have customisable features, allowing you to create the exact vape experience that you desire. Everything from the temperature and voltage to sub-ohm capabilities can be tinkered with on a vape mod to really transform how you consume e-liquid. But with such a high level of personalisation comes a requirement for a certain level of knowledge.
There are so many different vape devices out there, from pens and pods to tanks and mods – it’s easy to get confused. So how can you identify a vape mod? Luckily, it’s easier than you might think as vape mods are typically much larger than any other vape device, as they house batteries that are responsible for firing the coil at whatever temperature you choose. And, of course – the most recognisable sign of a vape mod is the impressive plumes of vapour it produces. Vape mods usually consist of:
And, with all of the above being interchangeable, you can swap mod components around, changing the vape to suit your current preferences.
Why would someone mod a vape?
E-cig kits for beginners offer a lot for the novice vaper, but for those who have worked their way through basic e-cigs and have started to understand what they truly enjoy in a vape, a mod can be much more rewarding.
The customisation of a vape mod covers both performance and appearance, with many of the biggest brands offering sleek and stylish mods to suit all vape preferences. But the biggest appeal, of course, lies within the ability to customise how the vape delivers e-liquid. Whether you’re opting for a regulated box mod with the built-in microchips offering temperature, wattage and voltage control, or an unregulated box mod, personalisation truly is the name of the game.
Perhaps you’re a lover of huge vape cloud production, or maybe you prioritise intense flavours above all else. You may also enjoy switching between regular vaping and sub-ohm vaping. Opting for a vape mod allows you to tweak the settings to achieve the exact results you want, which in the long run can save you time and a lot of money as you won’t feel the need to buy numerous different vape devices for different uses.
How can you mod a vape?
Generally speaking, depending on your level of experience, and how much you want to customise, you can opt for either a regulated box mod or an unregulated box mod. Both offer a certain level of customisation, however, there are some crucial differences.
What is a regulated box mod?
The most recognisable features of a regulated box mod include:
- A regulating circuit board to prevent overheating.
- Clear digital display to show error messages and stat info.
- Built-in protection to avoid battery damage.
- Variable wattage and voltage.
What is an unregulated box mod?
Unregulated box mods can be identified by the following features:
- No built-in protection.
- Inability to alter voltage or wattage.
- Replaceable and rechargeable batteries.
- Higher power output to the atomiser.
Whilst there are clear benefits to opting for either regulated or unregulated vape mods, beginners are not advised to use an unregulated box mod as these really do require advanced knowledge for a safe and effective vape experience.

Vape mod safety precautions
As you can see, there are so many benefits to opting for a vape mod, but with such a range of customisable features comes a need for knowledge and understanding of what you are doing. However, we want every vaper to feel confident enough to pick up a mod, beginners and veterans alike!
Here are a few safety precautions to consider when using your vape mod:
- Always choose a vape mod that is suitable for your level of knowledge – opting for a simpler mod to start with will set you in good stead for the future as you learn and hone your skill. Choosing something like a sub-ohm mod when you haven’t vaped before will only end in an unpleasant and potentially harmful experience.
- Don’t over-charge your battery – vape mod batteries have the potential to overheat when charged for too long. And, whilst some vape mods have safety features to help prevent overheating, it is generally advised that you never leave your mod batteries charging overnight or for long periods of time.
- Change your coil when it’s time – a coil that has burnt out can be both disgusting to vape with and harmful to the vape device. You should always ensure therefore that you are changing your vape coil regularly, usually on a weekly basis.
There are many safety precautions to consider when using a vape mod, and this is just a glimpse into some of the most important. For more detailed advice about the specific vape device you’re considering, be sure to get in touch with our friendly and knowledgeable team.
Other ways to mod a vape
Of course, for those vape enthusiasts who have been vaping for many years, mods offer huge appeal, but did you know that there are other, more technical ways you can mod a vape? If you’re using an unregulated vape mod, you have the freedom to adjust a number of factors in order to mod your vape accordingly – but as we stated above, this is
only appropriate for experienced vapers who understand exactly how things such as Ohm’s Law work.
What is Ohm’s Law?
Ohms is the unit of measurement used when we talk about electrical resistance. Understanding Ohm’s Law is critical to establish how much power you are drawing from your battery to your atomiser when you vape. Understanding this fundamental safety precaution is paramount when you mod a vape, as a mechanical mod will still allow you to vape even when it is not safe to do so.
Essentially, Ohm’s Law can be described as the lower your coil resistance, the more electrical current can flow through it. The higher the resistance, the less electrical flow through. Higher electrical flow allows for:
- Increased heat in the coil
- Increased vapour production
- Stronger and warmer vapour
However, it can also lead to:
- A shorter battery life meaning more regular charging is needed
- E-liquid is vaporised quicker, so more regular top-ups are required
- A shorter coil life
- A dryer throat hit
Of course, if you choose an increase in coil resistance, you can expect the opposite effects, so it really does depend on your personal preferences. The following can be expected with a higher resistance coil:
- Reduced electrical flow through
- Less vapour production
- Cooler vape experience
- Potentially less intense flavours
- Reduced coil heat
- Longer battery life
- Longer lasting e-liquid
- Smoother throat hit
Wattage & voltage
Controlling your coil resistance (ohms) is one way you can mod your vape device, but it isn’t the only way. Variable wattage and voltage can also play a hand in how your vape experience plays out, having an impact on everything from how intense your e-liquid tastes to how much vapour production you get. Wattage refers to the amount of power your vape produces. The higher the wattage, the more power potential your vape mod has. Voltage refers to the amount of power put through the vape mod. As wattage goes up, as does the voltage, and vice versa. One of the big benefits of a vape mod is the choice of batteries on offer, with two main types allowing you to customise your vape mod according to your preferences.
The main types of vape batteries are variable wattage and variable voltage batteries, and although it may sound complicated, more often than not you can easily adjust the settings by pressing a + or – button on your vape mod device.
In short, increasing the battery power on your vape mod will ramp up how intense your vape experience is. If you want a lot of vapour, you can mix and match components to get the desired effect, combining a low resistance coil with a higher wattage battery to increase vapour production.
We must note here that vape mods can pose a risk if you don’t know what you’re doing, and so we advise against beginners experimenting at this level. A vape mod with too much power can lead to a burnt-out coil and could also pose a risk to the vape device itself if the settings aren’t correct.
The replacement parts list
Vape mods are all about customizability, which is why the ability to switch up components is so important. Of course, not every aspect of a vape mod kit is replaceable, so here’s a rundown of the parts you can swap and change as you see fit.
- Batteries – not your standard batteries, vape mod batteries can be recharged, replaced, and even bought as speciality batteries to deliver a specific result.
- Sub-ohm tank – offering huge vapour potential, sub-ohm tanks offer everything all in one place, with replaceable coils as and when yours burns out.
- Wick – the cotton threading for the absorption of your favourite e-liquid, this is usually made from cotton, but you can opt for a range of different wicking materials depending on your preferences, including silica cord, stainless steel mesh and ceramic.
- Atomiser – Perfect for those using a vape mod for the first time, atomisers offer everything in one place, ready to go. No need to buy loads of separate components, simply screw it in place and get vaping!
- Drip tip – otherwise known as the mouthpiece, you can buy a range of drip tips, whether yours needs a refresh or you just want to go for a new style.
- Coil – last but by no means least, the coil is a crucial element of any vape mod and is responsible for heating the wick and delivering those tasty vape clouds. You can get a range of different coils including single and dual coils in a variety of resistances and materials for different vape experiences.
Vape mods are designed for easy component switch-outs, which is why we’re dedicated to offering such a broad range of accessories – so whatever you’re customising, doing so has never been so simple!
